What is considered an “acceptable” form of identification when appearing before a notary public?
As a Notary one of our fundamental duties is to properly identify our client(s). For some this may be viewed as a nuisance, notwithstanding it’s a necessary step to safeguard against fraud. If you plan to have a document notarized, remember to bring at least one of the accepted forms of identification mentioned below.
Although most states have adopted in part or in whole the identity requirements set forth by the Model Notary Act, it is always important to understand that states have their own notary laws and rules. Common accepted forms of identification are:
- Driver License
- State Issued ID Card (Senior ID, Under 18 ID, CA ID)
- U.S. Passport
- U.S. Military ID Card
- Mexican or Canadian Driver License issued by an authorized agency
- Foreign Passport if stamped by the Immigration and Naturalization Service
- Resident alien identification card (green card)
